Lost the source of this one, but it’s a great theory that really makes sense. The illusion Amon creates by blocking the light chakra is the separation between benders and non-benders. Thus, the forgotten truth is, everyone already is equal because everyone posseses the potential to bend, it just needs to be realized again. Makes sense is you think about how the first benders had to learn and develop their abilities or how all the airbenders could bend because of their high spirituality coming from the air nomads’ lifestyle.

Not to mention, Amon has been building hype about his ability to remove bending for quite some time. Psychology is a powerful thing, and I imagine that if people truly believe that Amon can remove bending, they give him the power to do so.
